Basement finishing and renovations in Hamilton

Albany Contracting Group does basement finishing and renovations in Hamilton: walls, floors, ceilings, light, a bathroom if you want one, and egress windows that meet Ontario building code requirements. The square footage is already yours. We make it a room.

Which one sounds like yours?

  • It's the biggest room in the house, and we only go down for the laundry.

Bare concrete, one bulb, the furnace humming. The space is there. Nobody wants to sit in it.

  • The kids need somewhere to be loud.

A family room downstairs means the living room gets to be quiet again.

  • We need an office that isn't the kitchen table.

A door that closes, light you can work by, and outlets where the desk goes.

  • Someone's going to sleep down there.

A guest, a teenager, a parent. A bedroom in the basement needs a way out, so it needs the right window. More on that below.

What we do

We finish basements as family rooms, offices, guest rooms, gyms and playrooms, built around how you'll use the space.

  1. Look at the space first. Ceiling height, ducts, posts, the stairs, the windows. They decide what the room can be.
  2. Plan the rooms. Where the walls go, where the light and outlets go, and whether you want a bathroom down there.
  3. Build it. Framing, insulation, drywall, ceilings, flooring, doors, trim, lighting.
  4. Finish. Paint, fixtures, trim touch-ups, clean-up.

Finishing goes over a dry basement. If water gets in now, start with basement waterproofing.

Egress windows

A basement bedroom needs a window big enough to get out through, openable from the inside. We install egress windows that meet Ontario building code requirements: the opening in the foundation wall, the new window, and the window well outside it. The size rule is in the FAQ below.

What affects the cost of a basement renovation

Every basement renovation is priced at the free in-home consultation, once we've seen the job. These move the price most:

  • Size and scopeHow much of the basement you finish, and how many rooms.
  • Egress windowsCutting a larger opening and adding a window well is its own piece of work.
  • A bathroomPlumbing depends on where the drains are now.
  • The ceilingDucts, pipes and beams change how the ceiling is framed.
  • MaterialsFlooring, doors, trim and lighting.
  • What we find once work startsOlder basements hide old wiring and odd framing. If we find something, we talk it through with you before it's fixed.
  • PermitsFinishing a basement can need one. Check whether your job needs a permit.

Questions we get

How much does a basement renovation cost in Hamilton?

Every basement renovation is priced at a free in-home consultation. How much you finish, and whether you add egress windows or a bathroom, change the price most. We measure and give you your price there. No obligation.

What size does an egress window need to be in Ontario?

When it's fully open, a bedroom's egress window needs an unobstructed opening of at least 0.35 square metres, with no side narrower than 380 mm. That's the Ontario Building Code, article 9.9.10.1. Both numbers count: a 380 mm by 380 mm opening is too small on area alone. The window also has to open from the inside without tools.

Does a basement bedroom need an egress window?

In most cases, yes. Ontario's Building Code expects a bedroom to have a window or door you can get out through. We check your basement's windows at the consultation.

When's a good time to finish a basement?

Any season, since it's indoor work. Egress windows mean digging outside, so tell us early if you want one. More in the best time of year to renovate.

Do you work outside Hamilton?
