Bathroom: marble-look tile, glass shower, white vanity and toilet

Tub to shower I'm done climbing over the side of the tub.

Tub to walk in shower conversions in Hamilton

Albany Contracting Group does tub to shower conversions in Hamilton. The tub comes out, the walls and floor get fixed, and a walk-in shower goes in its place, built to fit your room.

Which one sounds like yours?

  • Nobody's had a bath in that tub for years.

    It's a shower with a wall you step over. Every morning.

  • My knees don't like the step anymore.

    The tub edge is the highest thing you climb in the house, and you do it wet. A walk-in shower takes that step away, or most of it.

  • Mom's moving in, and the bathroom isn't ready for her.

    She needs somewhere to sit and something to hold. That's a room you can plan now, before anyone slips.

  • The surround is mouldy and the caulk won't stay white.

    Old tub surrounds trap water at the seams. When the shower is rebuilt, that's the part that gets done right.

What we do

A conversion is a smaller job than a full renovation, but it is still built, not dropped in.

  1. Take the tub out. Tub, surround and old tile come out, down to the studs and the floor.
  2. Check what's behind it. Water that got past the old caulk shows up here. We fix the walls and the floor before anything new goes on.
  3. Build the shower. The drain is set for a shower, then the base, the waterproofing behind the tile, the tile, the valve and head.
  4. Finish it. Glass or a curtain rod, a niche for bottles, and anything you asked for to make it easier to use.

Planned for safer bathing

A walk-in shower is easier to step into than a tub. People often add:

  • a low step-in, so there's less to climb;
  • a built-in bench or a seat;
  • a grab bar where your hand goes anyway;
  • floor tile with more grip;
  • a hand-held shower head you can use sitting down.

Tell us who's using it and how. We plan the shower around that person. These are building choices, not a medical device.

What affects the cost of a tub to shower conversion

Every tub to shower conversion is priced at the free in-home consultation, once we've seen the job. These change the price most:

  • What's behind the tubDry walls and a sound floor are one job. Soft, wet framing is more.
  • The drainA shower drain sits differently from a tub drain. How far it moves matters.
  • Size of the showerKeeping the tub's footprint, or making the shower bigger.
  • MaterialsTile, the base, glass and fixtures.
  • What you addA bench, grab bars, a hand-held head, a niche.
  • PermitsSome plumbing work needs one. Check whether your job needs a permit.

I contacted Albany regarding rebuilding our shower in our ensuite after we had had a leak and I am so happy that I entrusted them to do the job. I cannot say enough good things about them! Everyone that we worked with treated us and our home with the utmost care and respect. They were all polite, respectful, professional, and congenial...I was sad to see them go! Special thanks to Joey for all of his guidance, product choices and his constant communication that made the entire process go smoothly and to Mike who gave great advice during the process that resulted in a shower that we rave about!

Questions we get

How much does a tub to shower conversion cost?

Every tub to shower conversion is priced at a free in-home consultation. What's behind the tub and how far the drain moves change the price most. We look, measure and give you your price there. No obligation.

Is a walk-in shower a good idea for seniors?

For many people, yes: there's no tub wall to climb over, and you can add a seat and grab bars. We plan it around the person using it. We build the shower you and your family decide on.

Can you change the rest of the bathroom at the same time?

Yes. Many people do the vanity, floor or lighting in the same job. See the bathroom renovations page, linked above.

When's a good time to do it?

Any time of year, since it's indoor work. If you're weighing timing, read the best time of year to renovate.

Do you work outside Hamilton?

Yes, in Hamilton and nearby towns. See where we work.
