Here's the kind of job it is

Usually a repair. One step or one corner going is often fixable without starting over. See concrete steps and porch repair.

Usually stonework. Lifted flagstone, loose caps, stone facing coming away. See stone and flagstone porches.

Usually a full rebuild. Several things failing at once, or a porch that's simply done. That's this page: keep reading.

We wanted the porch to be the best part of the house.

That's how a lot of our porch jobs start. Every photo here is a porch we finished in and around Hamilton.

We're Hamilton's porch and stone people. Family-owned, renovating Hamilton homes since 1999, with an office at 875 Main St W, Unit 200. Kim Garnet holds a Master Builders Licence in Hamilton. Insured. Warranty on most items.

Concrete, stone or wood. What's the difference?

Concrete. Poured steps and landings, plain or exposed aggregate, often with stone or brick on the sides. Concrete is the backbone of most Hamilton front porches. For driveways and walkways, see concrete work.

Stone and flagstone. Flagstone on the landing and treads, stone facing on the skirting, stone columns. It's the porch people stop to look at. More on stone and flagstone porches.

Wood or composite. A framed porch with wood or composite boards. Lighter, and the right fit for some houses. We'll talk through which suits yours at the consultation.

Not sure which you have, or which you want? Send a photo. We'll tell you what we see.

The railing is the part you hold every day.

We build porches with custom railings: aluminum picket, glass panel, in black, white or bronze. You'll see all of them in the photos above. A new railing often goes in with a new landing, so we price them together.

Decks built by the same crew

Somewhere to sit outside, round the back. The crew that builds our porches builds decks too: deck builds, deck repair, and composite decking or pressure-treated wood, with stairs and railings to match.

Deck repair starts the same way a porch does. Tell us what it's doing: soft boards, a wobbly railing, stairs that have had it. We'll come and look.

What affects the cost of a front porch rebuild

No two porches price the same. These are what move the number:

  • Size and scopeA landing and three steps, or a covered porch with columns.
  • MaterialConcrete, stone and flagstone, or wood and composite.
  • What has to come out firstTaking down an old porch is part of the job.
  • Railings and finishingStyle, length and colour.
  • Permitswhere the job needs one.
  • What we find once the old porch is offIf something changes, we talk about it before we carry on.

Every porch is priced at the free consultation in your home, once we've seen the job.

Albany did a great job removing our deteriorated wood porch this past fall and rebuilding fresh concrete steps with matching brick to the house. It's easy for most contractors to show up and give a quick quote on a project, but what stood out to me with Albany is they actually spent a chunk of time assessing the porch from the inside out and educating me on the entire restoration process, which I really appreciated as a first time home owner. That's how I knew they were the ones to hire. Everyone was professional, on time, patient, and great at their craft. You can count on quality work with these guys. I look forward to using their services again in the future.

We are grateful to our neighbours for recommending this family-operated company. Our new porch and railings are beautiful additions to our home. Joey was always available for questions and ensured all work was completed to his and our satisfaction. We look forward to working with Albany again.

Questions we get

How much does a front porch rebuild cost in Hamilton?

Every front porch rebuild is priced at a free in-home consultation, because the size of the porch and the material you pick change the price more than anything else. We look at the job first, then give you the price.

Should I repair my porch or replace it?

If one step or one corner is failing and the rest is solid, a repair is often enough. If several things are going at once, a front porch replacement usually makes more sense. We'll tell you which we'd do at the consultation, before any price. More on porch repair.

Do I need a permit to rebuild my front porch in Hamilton?

It depends on the work. Our checker, Do you need a permit in Hamilton?, answers it for porches and decks from the City of Hamilton's own pages.

What's the best material for a front porch?

The best material is the one that suits your house and how you use the porch. Concrete is the common base, stone and flagstone are the showpiece, and wood or composite fit some houses better. We'll show you finished examples of each.

When should I book a porch rebuild?

Earlier is better, because porch work happens outdoors in the warmer months. Our guide to the best time of year to renovate explains why.

Do you build decks as well as porches?

Yes. The same crew builds and repairs decks, in wood or composite. See decks above.
